Since the 1997 "flat" tree, the obvious next phase is to go 3D. 3D has the advanctage of disposing of even more CDs in one swell foop (a good thing) but modeling and designing the construct is much harder. The above is the best we've come up with so far. The actual construction will use CDs instead of pennies, and so the connectors will be much less prominent. Most likely lights will be strung in the interior, which should create nice reflections. Suggestions for improvements are welcome.
